WHY I RIDE

I am proud to join Pedal the Cause in the fight against cancer. As many of you know, my dad, Ray Machens, lost his battle with cancer in January of 2017. It was a hard fought battle of three years, and we couldn't have done it without Siteman Cancer Center. My dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2014. A pancreatic cancer diagnosis is not something you ever want to hear as it typically has a very short life expectancy (months). However, we met with a surgeon at Siteman and he successfully performed the Whipple procedure on my dad to remove part of his pancreas that contained the tumor. My dad was cancer free following the procedure. However, my dad's cancer returned one year later and had metastasized to his liver and other organs. We met with an oncologist at Siteman at Barnes West County Hospital. My dad received treatment the following two years and was able to live a fairly active life. My dad became very weak his last couple of months and passed away on January 9, 2017. However, we were give three additional years with him that I know we would not have if it not had been for the doctors and nurses at Siteman. They are not only specialists in their field, they are very caring individuals who truly want to help their patients and their families.

Pedal the Cause is more than the region's top cycling event. It's a way of life, a celebration, and a movement fueled by the courage to end cancer. It takes world-class research to create a world without cancer. Please help me in this journey by donating to my ride, and give with confidence knowing that 100% of your donation will go directly to accelerating cancer research at Siteman Cancer Center and St. Louis Children's Hospital.
