Why I ride: I am extremely excited to ride again with Pedal the Cause. This year I am riding with more energy and motivation than ever before as I recently got my own bike that I am anxious to get out on the road!

I have many reasons to ride in Pedal the Cause, one of the key reasons is because over the past four years cancer has hit very close to home. I originally rode my first PTC back in 2013 the day after my Uncle Jerry's funeral. Cancer took his life only one month after his diagnosis. His death hit everyone in my family very hard and left a void in the community where he lived in Olney, IL. When I am out on a bike ride or run I think about my Uncle Jerry often because he was such a wonderful man who was was loved by so many. He also enjoyed life immensely and stayed in great shape into is mid 70s via the several triathlons he did.

This year I have another motivation to fight for a cure to cancer. This year my beloved Uncle Tom found out that he has Stage IV stomach cancer. Like Jerry, Tom was in fantastic shape and was absolutely shocked with the diagnosis. Our entire family prays for him and my Aunt Jane as they endure this terrible disease together. I talk with my Uncle frequently about life, share laughs about old memories, and listen to him tell me about his trips to see his sons and grandkids. His life is forever changed by cancer and the exhaustive chemotherapy sessions he is in the midst of. Hearing him talk about what he is going through motivates me to cherish what we all have in life and the relationships we have.

As one way that I can honor my Uncle Tom and the memory of my Uncle Jerry I am proud to join Pedal the Cause in the fight against cancer. Pedal the Cause is more than the region's top cycling event. It's a way of life, a celebration, and a movement fueled by the courage to end cancer.

It takes world-class research to create a world without cancer. Please help me in this journey by donating to my ride, and give with confidence knowing that 100% of your donation will go directly to accelerating cancer research at Siteman Cancer Center and St. Louis Children's Hospital.

Sincerely,
Jonathan Wirth
