Why I ride: I want to first and foremost thank everyone for the overwhelming amount of support my family and I have received over the past few weeks. The thoughts, prayers, cards, flowers, meals, and visits have made the beginning of this battle much easier for all of us.
I've always known that cancer is a scary word, and everyone knows that to some degree. I don't think I quite realized the magnitude of it until the most important person in my life was diagnosed this past January. All of the emotions I initially experienced were overwhelming to say the least, but my sadness quickly turned into frustration. Frustration not only because this disease was affecting the most invincible person I know, but frustration that there was nothing I could do to reverse his diagnosis or take away both the physical and emotional pain this has caused so many people.
I continued on with my daily life as normally as possible, obviously with the situation always on the forefront of my mind. In many ways, the news motivated me to wake up and be a better daughter, a better friend, a better employee - a little bit more like Stubby every day. I tried to emulate his incomparable work ethic, his persistence, and his positivity in even the smallest of tasks. It finally hit me that while I can't change the current situation, I can raise funds for cancer research, awareness, and education. I can do something extremely positive with the negativity that has entered my family's life.
Siteman Cancer Center is the world leader in cancer care, and where my dad has spent his time seeking treatment. Pedal The Cause is an annual fundraising bike challenge, in which 100% of the proceeds go to Siteman Cancer Center as well as St. Louis Children's Hospital. In 7 years, Pedal has donated more than $15 million towards advancing cancer research. I invite you to become a member of our team, Stubby Strong. I realize many of you are not local to the area, and others of you are already involved in the cause in some capacity. Either way, there are several ways to participate, whether it be as a virtual rider, or simply by donating.
Thank you all for your consideration, and for your continued support of my dad and our family. Words cannot express the gratitude Greg, Nancy, Lauren, and myself feel knowing we have all of you by our sides during this time.
