WHY I'M INSPIRED

Given the prevalence of cancer in the United States, I suppose it was somewhat inevitable that at some point someone very close to me would be diagnosed.

Shortly after riding my fifth Pedal the Cause in 2019, it happened - my dad was diagnosed with throat cancer. In many ways, we were lucky in this very unlucky situation: it was caught early (stage two); he had access to one of the best cancer centers in the world (Siteman); and I work for the medical center where Siteman is located. Starting in November last year, Mom and Dad moved in with Eric and me to begin Dad's cancer care journey.

I have helped navigate health care and have performed patient advocacy likely hundreds of times at this point for various friends or elected officials as part of my job. I have to say, being on the family side of patient advocacy is a whole different emotional ball game. I am so full of gratitude for the Washington University medical practitioners, team members, and staff who made a really horrible situation less scary through their expertise, kindness, and humor.

Dad is still completing followup visits, but finished his chemo and radiation in February, again, luckily before the world turned upside down from COVID in March (That's him ringing "the bell" in my picture).

Fundraising for Siteman and Siteman Kids has become much more personal in my sixth year of Pedal the Cause, and likely it will be for you someday too. If you can't give now, please share this post with friends and family who might be interested in and able to donate.

Many, many thanks for your time and consideration!
