This is my 10th year riding Pedal the Cause to raise money for cancer research. It is my husband Rizwan's 1st year and our daughters will be joining us again. Each year we have more names to honor and more stories to share.

This year, our hearts are heavy. We again ride in honor of Anne Mayes. We also ride in honor of Nina Ahmed, Rizwan's aunt, who just lost her battle to lung cancer on September 16. Her loss brings back the memories of Rizwan's mother's battle which she lost in 1996.

We also ride for my friend Stephanie Gurley-Thomas who is newly diagnosed with melanoma. And I mean newly diagnosed. Over Labor Day she noticed a dark spot on her upper thigh. She and her husband immediately knew it didn't look good. It was the size of a quarter, but not raised or itchy. The spot was in a nearly impossible-to-see area on her leg. It was a fluke that she even saw it.

But seeing it kicked off a whirlwind of activity in a short amount of time that culminated in surgery to remove the melanoma along with two lymph nodes. As I write this, she is waiting for the pathology results while she is healing with a 7-inch scar from the melanoma removal plus scars from the lymph nodes.

In the blink of an eye, everything can change. You happen to look over your shoulder in a mirror and catch a glimpse of spot on your leg.

In a heartbeat Stephanie and her family went from having a wonderful holiday weekend to fear of what the future might hold.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the US. Pedal the Cause provides critical funding for cancer research in St. Louis.

My family and I will be riding 20 miles on Sunday, September 23. Please consider donating through any of our family links below.

We ride for Team Clare.
We ride because Clare declared we need to tell cancer that it will not win.
We ride because in 2012, Clare rode 15 miles with stage IV cancer.
We ride to honor Clare and so many others.
We ride for a World Without Cancer.

ALL of the money raises goes directly to provide funding for cancer research at Siteman Cancer Center and St. Louis Children's Hospital.

PLEASE help us with a donation. No amount is too small! Every dollar helps.
