WHY I RIDE

Pedal 2023 will be the biggest and best one ever! We are excited to be part of this event once again and know that there is still much work to do to eradicate cancer.

Pedal the Cause, and the fight against cancer is about research, clinical trials and new treatments. I am a two-time lymphoma survivor that received world-class care at the Siteman Cancer Center by Nancy Bartlett and her team, or I would not be here.

In 2010, my wife Amy and I founded Pedal the Cause with a mission to raise long-term, significant funding for Siteman Cancer Center and St. Louis Children's Hospital, with the hope that the research funded by Pedal will lead to effective treatments and potential cures for cancer.

As of this year, Pedal will have cumulatively raised approximately $45 million dollars for cancer research, funded well over a 120+ project grants, and received donations from 200,000+ individuals. This is in addition to a multiplier from our grants the have generated more than 10X multiplier in add on grants. Those numbers are heartening, but there is more work to be done.

1 in 2 men and women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. The odds are staggering, and it pushes us to go further and move faster towards a cure. There are phenomenal advances in research and treatments coming every day and the next decade will be critical to the development of sophisticated, individualized treatments for cancer. We are making real progress against this disease and this is not the time to let up. Siteman Cancer Center is positioned to be at the forefront of bringing genomic medicine, immunotherapy and new clinical trials to patients here in St. Louis and the region it serves. Siteman is currently a top 10 rated cancer center with the 3rd largest amount of new patients each year in the US in addition to managing the 2nd highest number of clinical trials.

With the necessary resources, we have every reason to believe that prevention, treatments and cures are on the horizon.

There are so many reasons to join the fight against cancer. At Pedal, everyone rides for their own reason. I've got four main reasons to ride, right here in this picture. My hope is that we will see cures and treatments in our lifetime so that our children and grandchildren would only be exposed to cancer as a manageable disease.
