I initially joined Pedal the Cause as a challenge for myself in 2014. I've always been an active individual and like to see what I can push myself to accomplish on a daily basis. The ride and event as a whole was a very emotional experience. Everyone who attends is motivated because of one person, multiple people, or even because they themselves are personally battling cancer. I ride in honor of my Dad. He has been through a lot and has remained strong. I also ride in memory of my Grandmother who fought a battle against ovarian cancer with grace and remained positive through it all. I could only hope to be half as optimistic and resilient if ever faced with such a hardship.

This year will be a different ride for me. I recently learned of a past colleague and friend that lost his battle to head and neck cancer. It is a really fresh wound. I am extremely sad to learn that this world will no longer posses his big heart and wonderful sense of humor. Though we may not have talked frequently, I always knew he was there to support me in a moments notice. I am blessed to have known him and glad to know that he is no longer suffering. The strength he had through his battle gives me the strength to conquer my own demons.

This year I have set out to ride the same distance as the last three years: 50-ish miles. I don't know that I'll ever venture past that distance. It is the perfect balance between a challenge and true enjoyment. Part of the fun of this event is being with your team for the Inspirational message, the meals, and the ride. You get to talk about what the ride means, why you're doing it, and help push each other through when you think there's absolutely no way you're going to make it up another hill (no matter how much of a hill it may be!). It is always an incredible ride that pushes me further than I ever thought I could push myself; something that people and families battling cancer go through everyday.

I support this cause very strongly because of their 100% model. All aspects of the event are donated to allow for all the money raised to be donated to research. Please help me in this journey by donating to my ride and give with confidence knowing that 100% of your donation will go directly to accelerating cancer research at Siteman Cancer Center and St. Louis Children's Hospital. Every dollar is important because you never know which dollar may be the one to push the research just far enough to find a cure.
