WHY I RIDE

Pedal the Cause has the mission to provide funding for cancer research at Siteman Cancer Center and St. Louis Children's Hospital through their annual cycling challenge in hopes that the research funded by their event will ultimately lead to a cure for cancer. Pedal the Cause funds innovative research projects that are just starting and struggling for funding. Once they get their early successes they then apply for federal funding. Within 5 years of investment for every $1 Pedal the Cause donates to research an additional $7 is obtained (on average) in federal funding. A 7:1 ROI and all here in St. Louis!

Pedal the Cause is more than a bike ride for me. Being a cancer survivor, the event is a reminder of what I went through and what my friends and family have went through with cancer. In June 20 years ago, I finished my last radiation treatment. It looked like the cancer was gone and everyone was elated, but sadly 6 months later I found out it was back and off to chemo I went. During my ride at Pedal the Cause I think a lot about everyone's cancer fight including my own? but I love riding my #cancercuringbike at Pedal the Cause and raising funds to create a world without cancer!

I once again have new reminders this year of why I ride Pedal the Cause. In April this year my cousin Elaine from Utah was diagnosed with breast cancer and just last week my cousin Gloria was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Last year it was my mom who was diagnosed and now this year it's Elaine and Gloria. I am also sad to see that my mom's cousin Barb passed away in June of this from cancer. I've ridden on behalf of Barb for several years at Pedal the Cause since she has had breast, lung, and gland cancers at different times in her life. She's had multiple battles with each of them and recently the lung cancer came back and this time it spread to her brain. She was a tough fighter, but this disease wins too often. Cancer is taking its toll on the women in my family.

2018 will be the 6th time I have been a fundraiser for Pedal The Cause although twice I missed riding at the event due to conflicts with family and work. I'm looking to having a great ride this year because my new bike I bought last year I'll have a whole season riding on it. September is looking to be an amazing cycling month with a possible century in Moab Utah the week before Pedal the Cause. Some of the proceeds from the century in Moab go to cancer charities (bonus!). I'll get to see Elaine as well so hopefully by the time September hits Elaine be looking in the mirror at cancer.

Once again I'll be part of Team World Wide Technology, a team associated with my employer. Our team captain Matt Long is also a cancer survivor and has been the driving force behind our team.

Please help me in this journey to find a cure by donating on my page and know that 100% of your donation will go directly to this cause. To donate via credit card, click on the 'Donate to my ride' button on this page. I will also take a personal check. Please make it out to the 'Pedal the Cause'. You can either mail it to my home address or call me to let me know you wish to donate and I'll make the effort to get the check from you!

Sincerely,
Gene
