My journey started in late 2016 as another Herrin Lady Tiger Basketball season was starting. It was a routine annual checkup, no symptoms, where some bloodwork results created cause for concern (Shoutout to Micah Oakley, PA for his diligence). The following months, throughout the season, included additional tests, scans, etc resulting in a diagnosis of a neuroendocrine tumor of the duodenum/pancreas and a referral to Dr. William Hawkins, Washington University Physician, along with a difficult decision to retire from coaching.

During my journey our daughter, Ashley, was engaged to be married in August, 2017. I recall wondering if I would be around to walk my one and only precious child down the aisle. Late April, 2017 Dr. Hawkins performed a Whipple procedure to remove a portion of both my pancreas and small intestines, gallbladder and multiple lymph nodes. I owe a great deal to Dr. Hawkins for his expertise and success, but knowing ultimately that I praise God for guiding his hands and blessing me beyond measure.

Needless to say, it was my honor and privilege to walk Ashley down that aisle just a few short months after my surgery and getting to dance the most amazing father/daughter dance. There wasn?t a dry eye in the place. She is approaching her 6th wedding anniversary and has blessed us with two of the most amazing grandkids, Max and Hailey.

The annual scans each year for the following 6 years resulted in clean scans and just today, July 13th, 2023, I rang that bell as I exited Siteman Center. During my visit, Dr. Hawkins made me aware of the PEDAL THE CAUSE and invited me to join his team, PANCREAS CANCER ROAD WARRIORS. And, once again, it is my honor and privilege. Live Life Everyday!
