WHY I RIDE

I am proud to join Pedal the Cause in the fight against cancer. Pedal the Cause is more than the region's top cycling event. It's a way of life, a celebration, and a movement fueled by the courage to end cancer. The "Pedal The Cause Inspired" event is the weekend of September 26th and 27th ~ my second annual 10-mile bike ride to help raise funds for cancer research. Although due to COVID-19, the events and the ride itself will be entirely different so that we all can still complete the ride in a safe way by social distancing.

For the last two years, our daughter decided to ride in Pedal the Cause because 100% of the donations go directly to Siteman Cancer Center and St. Louis Children's Hospital located in St. Louis, MO. Sydney's grandma (my mom) was diagnosed with Stage 3 Lung Cancer in July of 2017. She went through 31 consecutive days of radiation (not including the weekends) and at the same time chemotherapy once a week for 10 weeks. After that, she continued on a maintenance infusion to keep the cancer at bay. Unfortunately, in October of 2018, a scan showed that my mom's tumor was growing and therefore she started another type of radiation called Photofrin.

In December, my mom came down with pneumonia and was hospitalized for 13 days. After she left the hospital, she came home with my family and me so we could help her get stronger and she could continue her fight. My mom was never hospitalized again and she lost her fight on February 2, 2019 peacefully at our house surrounded by Tracy, Sydney, Scott and me.

For those of you that knew my mom, she was selfless and loving. She loved her children and grandchildren unconditionally and always thought of us first. My life is forever changed and there is not a day that goes by that I do not think about my mom. My mom has always been an important person in my life, and we had a lot of important talks after her cancer diagnosis. When my mom chose to stop treatment and began hospice, I selfishly asked her how I was going to live my life without her physically in it. That is a question I am still trying to figure out on a daily basis.

I love and miss you mom!

This will be my second-year riding to fight cancer in memory of my mom and in honor of one of our close friends, Tammy Linn.

Tammy is another person in my life who is selfless, loving and thinks about other people all time. Almost 4 years ago, she was diagnosed with a malignant stage 4 Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Carcinoma with metastasis to the liver (NETs). She is currently being treated at Siteman Cancer Center. Throughout Tammy's journey, she has personally seen the need for what Pedal the Cause donations can do to support critical research at Siteman Cancer Center. 2020 has been a difficult year for my friend. Her most recent treatments include IV chemo at Siteman Cancer Center, and earlier this year she had (2) Y90 liver-directed treatments. Her last CT scan was July 1st. It showed that the chemo was not working on some aggressive tumors that she had, and that they would need to try a different chemo. Unfortunately, this will be the last available treatment option for Tammy. All the people that love Tammy are hopeful that this current chemo will keep these tumors at bay, so we can enjoy our sweet friend for many more years. Even though she does not feel her best, she will be riding again this year! Our family loves you Tammy and we feel so blessed to have you in our lives.

In these days of coronavirus, it is difficult to even send out a fundraising email, but I would be so grateful if you could help me raise money to help Tammy and all the other cancer patients continue their fight.
