I do love cycling. Of course that's part of why I ride. But there's another reason I ride.

At age 50, my mom suddenly became ill, and was taken to the hospital for testing. It very quickly escalated, and we found out she had stage 4 colon cancer. It was an awful journey, but we were fortunate to have another 15 months with her before the cancer took her life. Thanks to modern medicine, colon cancer can be screened and treated early. This has helped both me and my sister in getting colonoscopies for advanced screening and treatment. Based on the results, it probably extended both of our lives. I want others to be able to say the same thing.

On July 29 of this year, Jake Vandermyde (Dunlap, IL) lost his battle with cancer at age 24. This was a kid we watched grow up at church, and was always full of life. Even after he was diagnosed at age 18, he never stopped fighting. He was a football player, swimmer, golfer, woodworker, and he even started and completed his Bio-Engineering degree while going through treatment. His positive attitude was a reminder that we all have a place in battling cancer. This year I ride for Jake.
