I ride for my dad, Dan Whelan. Dad had a very rare form of cancer. He was truly 1 in 7,000,000,000. However, cancer never slowed him down. Dad was always an active person. He trained for and ran 10 marathons. Then when they had to remove 15% of his right lower lobe of his lung, dad decided to do the next easiest cardio .... endurance biking. That is when Dad got involved with Pedal the Cause. We, as his family, had always chased him around during his marathon days, so we decided to continue the tradition and chase him while he biked in Pedal. We played loud music, wore Hawaiian print, and hung out car windows with cowbells. Chasing dad around for either the marathons or Pedal has always been one of my fondest memories. It was something we could always look forward to.

On October 27, 2017, Dad took his last breath. On that day, I thought cancer won. As I started hearing more stories about Dad, and all the different people he has impacted, I realized cancer has not won. Dad is still alive in all of us, as long as we continue to carry on his legacy. A part of his legacy involves Pedal the Cause. He knew all the money he was raising was not going to fund a project to cure his specific cancer (he always hoped though). Dad knew all the money was going to projects that saved other moms and dad, so their kids didn't have to go through what so many other kids, including his own, had to live through.

So, I ride for my dad. To carry on his legacy. And I ride for the kids out there whose parents are battling cancer, so one day we can all say we beat cancer.
