This is my third year riding in Pedal the Cause. In June of 2017 my mom was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma - cancer of the bile duct. She underwent a major surgery in August of that year to remove the tumor, which encompassed her bile duct and the right portion of her liver. After nearly 9 hours in the operating room, we got the great news that they were able to remove the tumor and the margins were clear. While she had no evidence of cancer, they still recommended chemotherapy because the tumor was very aggressive and this type of cancer has a very high reoccurrence rate. Mom started chemo by pill in October and wrapped up her 8 cycles at the end of March 2018.

Unfortunately, in October 2018, two new nodules were found in the lower left lobe of her lung. Since they were both in the same lobe, the decision was made to remove that portion of her lung. So, on November 30, we headed back to Barnes for another surgery and recovery. The pathology reports confirmed that the nodules were metastatic bile duct cancer, so that was not exactly the news we had hoped for. Mom started infusion chemotherapy in February and will continue with this treatment every other week for 6 months.

It has been a long road, but we have had some positive outcomes and are so grateful for the amazing care my mom has received at Barnes and Siteman.

The team at Siteman has been doing amazing things and hopefully with funding from events like Pedal the Cause, we can one day live in a world without cancer. Any donation is greatly appreciated and 100% of your donation will go directly to accelerating cancer research at Siteman Cancer Center.
